Derbi was founded in 1922 by Simon Rabasa i Singla as a little bicycle garage that quickly developed into a motorcycle manufacturer, emerging as the biggest in Spain. Derbi celebrated its 85th anniversary in 2008 and has recently become a part of the giant Italian company Piaggio Group.

85 years of success in the motorcycle market and on the race track Derbi capped its 85th Anniversary with a World Championship in the highly competitive 125cc Moto GP with Mike Dia Meglio in 2008. That success is its 19th World Championship victory dating back to 1962, in 50cc 80cc and 125cc categories.

Derbi achieved a great deal of its success with the legendary rider Angel Nieto a Spanish rider from Zamora who won 5 world titles with Derbi, three in the 50cc class and two in the 125cc category, which contributed to the creation of the Red Bullets legend. Nieto's record number of World Championship victories was only surpassed in France in 2008 by the great Valentino Rossi who paid tribute to him that day by carrying Nieto on his parade lap that afternoon.
